After reading others' experiences, I realized I would have to upgrade my 993 jacking and jack stand procedure for the engine drop. The engine drop requires a lot of clearance at the rear!

The first step was to buy 4 Esco flat-top jack stands. (I've been eyeing these for years, and finally found justification!)
Four Flat-Top Esco Jack Stands |
Versus Previous Jack Stand |
There are two common approaches to raising your 993 on to jack stands: the teeter-totter method and the "cactus" method. So far I've been using the teeter-totter method, but to obtain the necessary height for the Esco stands at max, I went with a hybrid approach. I would have used the cactus method alone, but I had limited space in front of the car.
- Roll rear on to 2x12 planks (probably not necessary with low-height floor jack)
- Chock driver side wheels
- Jack under passenger rear until Esco at min height fits under passenger front jack point.
- Chock passenger side rear wheel
- Jack under driver rear until Esco at min height fits under driver front jack point.
- Jack under engine and place both rear jack stands at min height
- Place board under the front of the car and jack the car until two front jack stands can be placed at max height
- Jack engine until two rear jack stands can be placed at full height.
Next time, I will probably modify the sequence to:
- Roll rear on to 2x12 planks (probably not necessary with low-height floor jack)
- Chock driver side wheels
- Jack under passenger rear until Esco at min height fits under passenger front jack point.
- Chock passenger side rear wheel
- Jack under driver rear until Esco at min height fits under driver front jack point.
- Jack under engine and place both rear jack stands at medium height
- Place board under the front of the car and jack the car until two front jack stands can be placed at max height
- Jack engine until two rear jack stands can be placed at full height.
